Tell me what you want: Augustine's Confessions and the Problem of Desire

James K.A. Smith, Ph.D

Wednesday, September 27, 7-8:30 p.m.
The Commons

What do we want most--really, sincerely, honestly? Freedom, pleasure, success, wealth, respect--or holiness? The straight path to righteousness is beset on all sides by temptations to love anything--anything at all--more than we love God. What do we do about it? How can we order our desires, and help our children to order their desires, according to God's plan?

James K. A. Smith, professor of philosophy at Calvin University and author of On the Road with St. Augustine, will address our present cultural confusion and help us think through the problem of self-knowledge in the context of Augustine's Confessions. Jamie is a dynamic speaker with a wealth of practical wisdom about habit formation and the cultural practices that lead us closer to God.

Preparing for the Total Solar Eclipse

On Monday, April 8 over a million people are expected to visit Texas to experience the wonders of a total solar eclipse.  The last time North Texas had a total solar eclipse was in 1878, and the next event is scheduled for 2317. Unless you were born after the Civil War or you plan to stay around another 300 years, this is a once in a lifetime event for you.

To prepare us for this heavenly experience, we have enlisted the help of a Discovery Institute Fellow, Melissa Cain Travis, who will equip us to better understand the wonders of God’s creation and deepen our conversations with our friends and neighbors.

We have two days of events leading up to the Monday solar eclipse.
