The Mission, Should You Choose to Accept…, by Jesse Olvera

Dear Covenant Families,
I cannot believe we are halfway through the school year! And the new calendar year brings a perfect opportunity to reflect on the heart of what we do in Covenant Athletics. While victories on the field or court are important, our ultimate goal is not simply to win games, but to glorify God through everything we do, both individually and as a team.
The Covenant School’s mission - to glorify God by equipping students with the tools necessary to pursue a lifetime of learning, so that they may discern, reason, and defend truth in service to our Lord, Jesus Christ - is at the core of everything we strive for in athletics. It is important to note, the mission is not only a guiding principle for academics, but it also shapes our athletic endeavors.
In athletics, this mission is realized in several ways:
- Character Development: Our athletes are encouraged to grow not only in skill and strength but also in integrity, perseverance, and respect. Through competition, we build character that reflects Christ’s love and grace, both on and off the field.
- Teamwork: Sports provide a powerful opportunity to cultivate relationships and build unity within a team, teaching athletes to serve one another and work together toward a common goal. Just as the body of Christ is one, so too should our teams be united in their purpose.
- Excellence: We pursue excellence in all things, not for our own glory, but to honor God with the gifts He has entrusted to us. Whether it's striving to improve individual performance, working hard during practices, or playing with sportsmanship, each action becomes a reflection of our commitment to glorifying God.
- Service to Others: Athletes are taught to use their talents and abilities not only for personal achievement but also in service to others—whether it's mentoring younger players, supporting teammates, or being a positive role model in the community.
At Covenant, we believe athletics is a platform where students can learn life lessons that will serve them well beyond the playing field. Our goal is to help our athletes grow in their ability to discern truth, reason, and defend their faith, as they continue to pursue a lifetime of learning, in service to Christ.
As we continue to move forward in athletics this year, I encourage you to join us in praying for our athletes, coaches, and the entire Covenant community, that we may honor God in all things. Together, let’s commit to supporting our students in their pursuit of excellence, both in athletics and in their walk with Christ.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support in making Covenant Athletics a place where character, faith, and excellence come together to glorify God.
Non Nobis,
Jesse Olvera
