Big Rocks by Melissa Hill

August 28th, 2024

Dear Covenant Families,

With our first Taco Rice Bowl day behind us and ever-quickening carpool lines ahead, we are gaining footing this school year. As always, school starts full of new (or reinstated) routines, schedules, and information. We know. Hang in there - you’re doing great!

Like many of you, for a very brief period, our family had at least one child in Grammar, Logic, and Rhetoric School at the same time.  It makes me laugh to think about it now. Like yours, our first few weeks of school were filled with three Knight Schools, team meetings, and grade-wide gatherings orienting us to the division-specific details. From carpool pick-up times to uniform requirements to homework, my head swam with all the details. When was Logic lunch again? Who do I call when my child wakes up sick? And is chapel dress Monday, or Thursday, or both?

If you find yourself nodding along to my experiences, rest assured we understand. Running a school involves numerous moving parts, and we are deeply committed to creating an environment where all these parts work in harmony.  It’s a challenging task, but we're dedicated to it because we understand that details matter.

It’s easy to get lost in the details, though. We know that, too. And we don’t want you to miss the big rocks for the pebbles and sand. If you feel overwhelmed, breathe and keep reading.

I’ve got three big rocks I need you to remember when you forget why you decided your children needed a Covenant education in the first place.

At Covenant, our distinct CHRISTIAN identity is not just a belief but the very foundation and purpose of our existence. Our faith in Jesus Christ is at the core of everything we do. Every aspect of life at Covenant is viewed through the lens of biblical truth, as we believe that all truth is God’s truth.  There is no bigger rock.

Second, Covenant is CLASSICAL. We are rooted in the rich educational history of the past and believe early writers, thinkers, and church fathers had much to say about 21st-century education. We aim to cultivate the life of the mind to equip our students to think well and rightly understand in the particular places God calls them to occupy well beyond their thirteen years here. A Covenant education is a marathon, not a sprint, and we are committed to this journey with you.

Third, we are a COMMUNITY. Whether in the classroom, at an after-school event, or hosting a dinner with fellow Covenant parents, we take the call to love our neighbor seriously and humbly seek to do so in service to one another and Christ. We are all partakers of the feast. Don’t miss it!

Friends, please don’t hear me say that the details don’t matter. They do. Especially using the crosswalks. I want to remind you, though, that the particulars serve and support what we believe and agree are the big rocks. So when your calendar looks full, and you’re feeling a little overwhelmed trying to remember if you’re bringing Advisory snacks this week, take a breath and text your friend who’s been in your shoes. Then grab a treat (my new favorite is a McDonald’s Hot Fudge Sundae), go to a park, plant your little family on a big rock, and enjoy the view.

Non Nobis,

Melissa Hill
