RHETORIC SCHOOL NEWS

Upcoming Events & INFO

Note: See the Counselor Corner below to begin thinking about summer opportunities!  Also new college visits updated below.

Makeup Work Reminder - Rhetoric students, as illnesses and school events come upon us this winter, please be reminded that makeup work should be turned in in a manner according to our makeup work policy--in advance of the school absence (or as directed by your teacher) or within the number of days you were out sick.  Teachers will place a Missing (M) in the gradebook before makeup work is turned in, and an M calculates as a 0.  It is imperative that makeup work be turned in within these parameters.

Uniform Update - With our new uniform vendor secured, now is the time to update uniforms.  Please take time this weekend to replace any uniform pieces that don't fit and note that we will finally be able to enforce uniform compliance.  Reminders for Rhetoric students--the khaki pants you want are the cotton twill, not the tech pants and skirts should be no more than five inches above the crease in the back of the knee.

Rhetoric history teacher, Mr. Phil Gibson, will be taking a group of students backpacking this summer.  See Colorado Backpacking Trip information and registration information here.

Rhetoric Student Volunteer Opportunity Grammar Chess Club is starting soon!  Wednesday mornings 7:00-7:45 AM in Rhetoric Hall.  Email [email protected] to sign up.  Mu Alpha Theta service hours granted as well.

If you have any questions about your costume, please talk to a StuCo representative, Mrs. Roberts, or Mr. Gibson.

Seniors:

  • You are responsible for submitting test scores to your colleges. Determine if your college requires the test score to be sent directly from the testing agency (ACT or College Board) or if you can upload a screenshot into the portal. Most often, scores entered on the Common App do not satisfy the test score requirement.

  • Don’t forget to check your email daily and open and read all emails from the colleges to which you have applied or are planning to apply.

  • Set up your portals and check them often to ensure all documents have been received.

  • Don’t forget to move your colleges to the APPLIED column in SCOIR after you submit your application.

The FAFSA is open. Here is some info to consider as you prepare to complete the forms. FAFSA Information for Senior Parents

Did you miss the Financial Aid Virtual Meeting? Here is a link to watch

Does your college require the CSS Profile? This is an additional financial aid document required by some of the more expensive, private colleges. This opens on October 1 and should be completed as soon as possible. Find more information here

Freshmen-Seniors: Outside Opportunities for Leadership, Academic Exploration, and Volunteerism

PSAT Scores are available and students may find scores in their College Board account.  Students will get a text and email, prompting them to set up a college board account (for new testers) or login to their already existing accounts.
For students setting up a college board account: PLEASE use the student’s personal email and write down the password. This account will stay with them throughout high school and college.  PLEASE do not use any PARENT data in this account.
It is VERY common for 9th and 10th-grade students to NOT finish the testing within the time allotted. They have NOT seen much of the curriculum that is covered on the test and do not have much practice with timed standardized testing. This is why we expose them to tests like this as early as 9th grade. Appropriately timed practice tests (after 10th grade) can help students master the art of pacing themselves in standardized testing situations.

Reminders & useful info

RHETORIC ATTENDANCE PROCEDURES

If your student is home sick or has a last minute appointment, please email Jennifer Tompkins at [email protected]. Students should check FACTS for missed assignments and contact teachers if they need clarification.

If your student has a pre-planned appointment or absence, he or she must get a pre-planned absence form from Mrs. Tompkins (also available on the Parent Portal) and obtain required signatures. All work is to be made up beforehand or at the direction of the teacher. For college visits, students must also get an official note from the college to confirm that they attended admissions events.

If your student gets sick while at school, he or she may visit the nurse, and the nurse will contact you. Students are not permitted to text parents during the school day and will not be permitted to leave unless the nurse has spoken to a parent.
